Delivering Regional Passenger Information ServicesAutomated traveler information systems have become one of the primary tools for transit providers seeking to increase ridership and improve customer satisfaction. In the past five years, a number of new technologies have made the development of such systems more affordable and more feasible for most agencies. Solutions in use range from downloadable system maps on transit web sites to wireless trip planning services to bus arrival countdown systems at the stop level. While the vast majority of larger agencies, and a compelling number of smaller organizations are embracing passenger information services, very few are doing so at the regional level. This paper looks at the need to blend local information services from multiple agencies into a regional service that facilitates travel from system to system and municipality to municipality. The paper also discusses the technical challenges that go along with integrating disparate systems and suggests some models that can be applied to meet different situations. |
