San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Unveils the SUPERBUS™ at World Transportation Gathering
Mobile broadband technology comes to the bus for enhanced rider services.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, November 10, 2005 – This week at the ITS World Congress, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) unveiled a peek of the future of transportation. The SUPERBUS™, a specially equipped bus using the latest in innovative, real-time and intelligent transportation solutions (ITS) to provide enhanced rider services to its passengers. November 7 through November 11, 2005, San Francisco area residents and visitors have a special opportunity to ride the SUPERBUS on a specially designated route in downtown San Francisco (abbreviated segment of the 30 Stockton line running between 4th and Townsend and Sutter and Stockton).
Mayor Gavin Newsome said: “This is completely in concert with my vision for increased wireless access for all San Franciscans.”
The SUPERBUS is a result of collaboration between the SFMTA, Trapeze Group and Motorola and is part of a special demonstration to the ITS World Congress showcasing the use of mobile broadband capabilities in public transit.
“Mobile broadband technology along the route means riders can surf the Internet while they wait for the bus or while in motion. We see this as a unique offering to our riders and a great way to increase passenger satisfaction,” said Stuart Sunshine, Acting Executive Director of the SFMTA.
Using mobile mesh networking technology from Motorola and powered by the Trapeze ITS system, the SUPERBUS provides:
- A MobileInternetCafe™ providing passengers with broadband mobile Internet access even while the bus is moving at high speeds.
- Location-based multimedia passenger announcements and entertainment so that riders can experience up-to-the-moment information on landmarks and other important information about route transfers, etc. throughout progress of their trip.
- Instantaneous ridership reporting – or passenger counting, to help the Agency evaluate passenger comfort improvement by balancing the load across vehicles in its system.
- Full vehicle tracking, two-way messaging and remote operations to and from the bus. Muni can monitor vehicle progress and security from across town or across the world.
