New Android and BlackBerry apps from Trapeze
London, UK | December 07 2011 Expansion of multi-modal smartphone services for travellers in Scotland and WalesTrapeze Group has completed two projects that expand the reach of popular smartphone services in Scotland and Wales. The groundbreaking joint Traveline Scotland / Traffic Scotland app is now available for BlackBerry – a first for the specialist Trapeze mobile team – and the bilingual Traveline Cymru app is now live for Android users.
The new releases complement highly successful iPhone apps already available in both countries and the Android app launched in Scotland earlier this year. A single convenient service now provides essential multi-modal travel information for a large proportion of the ever-growing community of smartphone owners.
The apps cover the whole of Scotland and Wales and are personalised and location-aware. Users simply browse a map and click stops to see live and scheduled bus times. Other features include road traffic updates, multi-modal journey planning, local taxi numbers and live news updates. Built from a common product core, the apps have been adapted to the specific requirements of each implementation. For example, the Scottish service includes ferries and the Glasgow Subway, while the bilingual Welsh version includes park & ride schemes and community transport.
iPhone, Android and BlackBerry are now clearly established as the big three smartphone platforms in the UK. Providing apps for this trio – separately crafted to make the best of each – allows authorities and operators to reach a huge proportion of smartphone owners, forming an effective core technology for communicating with people on the move.
On the latest development, Graham Walter, General Manager for Traveline Cymru said: “We’re delighted that we’re now able to offer Android users the opportunity to access Traveline information from their mobile phones. The ability to provide information on the move is key to our market and is an essential part of what we do, and making the application free of charge provides value for money both for the end user customer and the Welsh Government who fund our services.”
The new services for travellers in Scotland and Wales are free to download from BlackBerry App World and Android Market respectively, and can be found here: https://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/65693

“Our specialist team now has proven expertise in all three of the main smartphone platforms, and we’re busy experimenting with Windows Phone too, which looks set to be the next big thing”, said Peter Bell, Managing Director at Trapeze. “BlackBerry in particular is a tough technology to do well, but we’re determined to keep quality absolutely to the fore as we expand the product range – excellent usability and flair and imagination in the design – so that these advanced services are available to an ever wider range of people.”
